Description
The project objective was to replace Gulf High School’s existing Building 1 and provide adequate space to replace the existing portables in a new, consolidated Building 1. The building’s program includes ESE classrooms, early childcare, dance and drama rooms, science laboratories/demonstration, nursing/health academy, gaming/computer labs, and standard classrooms. Additionally, the program includes the administration suite, media center, commons, receiving area, and cafeteria. The existing classroom building was converted from a science wing into art studios and ROTC classrooms. Other campus improvements included creation of a new parent drop-off, student/teacher parking, air-cooled chillers and central energy plant, and bus queuing drop-off, all while preserving and protecting the ongoing function of an active school campus. Through phasing of work, our design segmented the campus into two halves of the site allowing the new building to be built and then occupied. After completion of the new Building 1, the existing building was demolished and replaced with a new bus loop and student parking. The existing site’s poor soil compaction and existing sink hole events required Ductile Iron Piles to support the foundation for the new Building 1 and a mat slab for the new central energy plant. Because this is an existing school with 100 years of rich history and beloved Buccaneer mascot heritage, the design implemented imagery evocative of the ocean, gulf, and nautical motifs in the façade, colors, and materiality. The campus will function as a beacon to revitalize the surrounding neighborhood and provide a new anchor to a community. The media center of the campus will function as a community meeting center for the surrounding neighborhood after school hours.
