SMH Radiation Oncology

VOTE NOW!

Description

To meet growing needs in the region, Sarasota Memorial Health Care System (SMHCS) embarked on a multiphase initiative focused on enhancing cancer treatment. The first phase resulted in the 18,000-square-foot Radiation Oncology Center offering premier radiation treatment in a comfortable, spa-like environment devoted solely to cancer care. The outpatient center includes two linear accelerator systems that deliver targeted radiation, treating cancer cells while protecting healthy tissue. The center also features a CT simulator system, patient-centered amenities, integrative care services, and administrative spaces for oncology physicians, fostering a holistic approach to care.

Patient-Centered Design for Holistic Healing

The facility's design, shaped by feedback from hospital users and community members, center on the patient’s journey through treatment. Upon entering the lobby’s double-height atrium featuring floor-to-ceiling windows, patients are drawn to an outdoor water feature symbolizing the completion of their radiation journey. The clinical space includes spa-like changing and sub-waiting areas with light filtering in from the adjacent corridor. Corridor skylights fill the space with natural light as patients walk to their treatment rooms. Soft colors, natural materials, and carefully chosen artwork create an airy, soothing environment that contrasts with confined, windowless radiation therapy centers often located in hospital basements.

Outside, patients can celebrate the completion of their radiation regiment with staff and family. The ceremonial water feature, set against a natural wooded backdrop, evokes the calming sound of a babbling brook, offering comfort as patients continue their wellness journey. A surrounding patio provides space for respite and reflection for all who visit. The thoughtful integration of healing elements, both indoors and out, plays a crucial role in supporting patients throughout their treatment journey.

Proactive Resiliency

Recognizing the facility's location in a region prone to severe weather, the design includes resiliency features such as provisions for a portable diesel generator, allowing treatments to continue during power outages following hurricanes.

Prioritizing Occupant Well-being

To prioritize occupant well-being, modern HVAC systems promote clean indoor air, while acoustic analysis helps maintain a quiet environment by controlling noise from air distribution systems. Thoughtful lighting enhances patient comfort while meeting functional needs. A dedicated IT room with automated controls actively monitors and supports ongoing facility performance.

The design addresses both the operational requirements of the facility and the comfort of patients, families, and staff. With the completion of this center, SMHCS continues to lead in delivering exceptional cancer care to the Sarasota and Manatee counties and beyond.
